In 1980 the Italian State Railways found itself with a large number of new and reliable vehicles in circulation for long and international routes, while for domestic medium-distance services vehicles designed or conceived for other types of service were often used.

To complete the fleet renewal operations, the FS therefore ordered a new family of carriages, called "Medium Distances": in the following years two versions were created, very similar, whose main difference was in the positioning of the vestibules and equipment.

The MDVC is the first version realized: the name means "Medie Distanze Vestiboli Centrali", even if it would be more correct to call them "paracentral".

In 1980 beschikten de Italiaanse staatsspoorwegen (FS) over een groot aantal nieuwe en betrouwbare voertuigen voor lange en internationale trajecten, terwijl zij voor binnenlandse middellange-afstandsdiensten vaak gebruik maakten van voertuigen die voor andere soorten diensten waren ontworpen of ontworpen.

Om de vernieuwing van het wagenpark te voltooien, bestelde FS een nieuwe familie rijtuigen, genaamd "Medium Distances": in de daaropvolgende jaren werden twee versies gecreëerd, die sterk op elkaar leken, maar waarvan het voornaamste verschil de plaatsing van de vestibules en de uitrusting betrof.

De MDVC is de eerste versie die wordt gebouwd: de naam betekent Middelgrote Afstand Centrale Vestibules, hoewel het correcter zou zijn om ze paracentraal te noemen.
