The GTOW freight wagons, also known as the E's, have been one of the characteristic wagons of both national and international freight traffic for many years. The GTOW wagons replaced some older types of coal wagons in the 1950s and were used in coal transport for a longer period of time. However, this transport declined sharply, so that the wagons were used for other transports.
