In de jaren na de introductie van de Airport-express werd het oude traject Amspoort CS - Landswaard extreem druk. Zo is het traject per eind 1985 viersporig geworden, en wordt het vliegveld bediend door een mix van DDM-dubbeldekkers als stoptrein en ICM-koplopers als sneltrein.
